Performed by a gynecologist, this procedure allows for microscopic study of the tissu lining of the vagina and cervix. Biopsies and treatments can be performed during the procedure. In general, a colposcopy takes between 5 to 10 minutes to complete.
A colposcopy is not a routine exam.

How does the colposcope work?
The colposcope is comprised. It is composed of a magnifying glass and an integrated lighting system. It is a low magnification binocular microscope that enables detecting abnormal cells and tumors of the vaginal and cervical skin lining.
Are there any risks to the procedure?
A colposcopy is considered a clinical examination without any real associated risks. However, any medical procedure, even when performed under optimal skills and security conditions, is not completely risk free. Following a cloposcopy, there can be minor bleeding or cramps. The use of sanitary pads for a few days following the procedure may be necessary.
If a biopsy is done, the results are usually available 5 to 10 days after the procedure.
